Issues to Consider

January to March 2017 was Town Election Season. For results of the election, use the links at the bottom.

This year there were several issues to consider:

  • Sewer Pump Station Bond – The $1.616 million bond will pay for a new sewer pump station and piping to eliminate the flow that is pumped under the river to Pembroke. This is to be paid from sewer funds.
  • School Budget – The $10.4 million proposed 2017 school budget was cut to $10.0 million by the Budget Committee on Jan. 12 and then jacked up to $10.4 million at the Deliberative Session. This is $620,000 higher than the 2016 school budget. Estimated tax increase is $3.84/1,000.
  • Teacher Raises – This warrant article proposes a three-year contract with an increase of $75,256 (1%) for the first year.
  • Paraprofessional Raises – This warrant article proposes a three-year contrct with an increase of $27,160 (1%) for the first year.
  • Zoning changes – Several warrant articles propose zoning changes but explanations for them have yet to be published.

Calendar of Events

January 6
Bond warrant article deadline. Last day to submit petition warrant articles to the Town Clerk for matters requiring the issuance of bonds.

January 10
Warrant article deadline. Last day to submit petition warrant articles to the Town Clerk for matters other than zoning, building code changes, or bonds.

January 12, 6 p.m., Town Hall
Hearing on Bond Warrant Articles. A public hearing on the bond warrant articles at the Board of Selectmen's meeting.

January 14 at 9:00 a.m.
Budget Committee Public Hearing to present the 2017 proposed operating budgets for Town, Sewer, and School Dept. and all warrant articles at the Allenstown Community Center on Whitten St.

January 25th to February 3rd
Sign up dates for candidates for town or school offices. File your candidacy with the Town Clerk or School District Clerk.

Feb. 4 (Saturday) at 9:00 a.m.
Deliberative Session at the Allenstown Community Center on Whitten St. At this public hearing, voters discussed and questioned budgets. A small group of school partisans ruined the day by outvoting the rest to increase the school budget to $10.4 million.

Thursday March 16 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Town Election at the St. John's Parish Hall on School St. from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. (Delayed from March 14 due to Nor'easter that day which dumped a foot or more of snow.
