Transfer Station Now Accepts
Household Trash

Dateline: May. 5, 2026

Due to the passage of the $150,000 warrant article at the March 10th town election, the Allenstown Transfer Station is once again able to accept household trash (AKA municipal solid waste). It took time to agree to a contract with Casella's and to purchase ten beautiful brick red dumpsters.

At the town election, this article easily passed by 412 to 161. The warrant article stated that this additional spending would cost about 85¢/$1,000. This was recently recalculated down to 28¢/$1,000. That results in an additional tax of $9.33/month for a $400,000 property and $11.67/month for a $500,000 property. That's definitely cheaper than what most people have been currently paying for private contractors. Of course, there is no curbside collection so you still need to haul your trash to the Transfer Station.

Layout of the Transfer Station

When you enter the Transfer Station, the Freebee tables are still available next to the Attendant's Booth.

When asked about the newly restored trash collection service, Transfer Station Supervisor Alisson Turcotte said, "It's a great idea and good for the residents."

At the dumpsters, one resident was emptying trash from his pickup truck. When asked what he thought of opening the station for trash collection, he complained that "They never should have stopped trash collection." He was not enthusiastic about it, saying "I don't have time to bring my trash here on Tuesday or Thursday morning. And what about all the elderly residents who many not be able to bring their trash here."

Another resident and his son were taking trash from their SUV before tossing an old water heater into the metal dumpster. When asked what they thought, the older resident said "They never should have closed it down."

When asked if they knew that funding for trash collection would last only until next March unless the Selectmen devised another warrant article or the Highway Dept. added the cost to their 2027 budget, they walked away in disgust with some rather unkindly opinions of the town government.

Beyond that, a light stream of residents drove in and quietly disposed of their trash.

Signage

New signage around the Transfer Station was installed to help residents locate the areas at which to dispose of several types of material.

To the right of the dumpsters is an area for used furniture. (Fee required)

Beyond the dumpsters are the areas for (1) sticks and brush, and (2) grass clippings and leaves. (No fee required)

On the left side of the dumpsters is a large cargo container for mattresses and box springs. (Fee required)

To the left of that container is a large open top dumpster for scrap metal. The front-end loader (bucket visible) is usually parked there to collect small metal items. (No fee required)

On the left side of the exit roadway are sheds for other types of items. The first shed is for motor vehicle batteries and the other shed is for electronics like computers, printers, batteries, and chargers. (No fee required)

You can recycle vegetable oil and motor oil at the third shed. The Highway Dept. uses this oil to heat the shed in the winter.

If you are wondering what are the disposal fees for other items like lawn mowers, air conditioners, and appliances, refer to the list on the town web site. This list also includes a small number of items for which there is no fee.

Note that you must drain the oil and gasoline from any small engine machine before bring it to the Transfer Station.

What You Can Do

If you are able to bring your household trash to the Transfer Station on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday, you might consider canceling your subscription for private curbside pickup. There is no need to pay for curbside trash pickup AND for the extra property tax that is funding trash collection at the Transfer Station.

If you know any elderly neighbors who might have difficulty taking their trash to the Transfer Station, consider this advice from the Apostle Paul. "Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others." (Philippians 2:3-4)
