Issues Decided in 2018
January to March 2018 was Town Election Season.
This year there were several issues to consider:
- Zoning changes Withdrawn at the last minute.
- Town Budget The selectmen allowed for a 2% increase in spending, resulting in a $78,497 increase over last year's budget ($4,003,181 for 2018 vs $3,924,683 for 2017).
Proposed budget failed; lower default budget put into effect.
- Sewer Dept. The sewer commissioners posted a $2,246,562 budget for 2018, $54,310 (2.5%) more than the 2017 budget of $2,192,252, but less than the default budget of $2,264,043. The largest increases were for utilities, sludge disposal, and retirement, but much of this was offset by income from septage haulers.
Proposed budget approved.
- School Budget The proposed 2018-19 school budget was $10,077,085 for 542 students, slightly less than the excessive 2017-18 budget of $10,286,644, but still costing an overpriced $18,592 per student. If you chose the default budget of $9,981,355, you would save $305,000 over last year's budget.
Proposed budget failed; lower default budget put into effect.
- Capital Reserve Funds Several warrant article propose putting your unspent tax money into several funds for expensive one-time expenditures.
All articles were approved.
- Tax Exemption Warrant Article 14 This gives businesses a schedule of exemptions to entice them to build or expand in Allentstown. This has the potential to jump start the town's economy. Read about it in the Town Voters' Guide. It's lengthy but do read the whole section.
Overwhelmingly approved by 70%.
